(Washington, DC) – Today, Dr. Sherif Zaafran, MD, chair of Physicians for Fair Coverage (PFC), applauded the call for action by made by President Trump to reduce health care costs and improve price transparency during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Additionally, Dr. Zaafran commended Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) for releasing statements supportive of the President’s remarks to reduce health care costs, each highlighting ending surprise billing as one solution.

“We applaud the call to action to put patients' financial well-being first by enacting federal legislation to shield them from surprise medical bills caused by inadequate insurance coverage,” said Dr. Zaafran. “President Trump's remarks during the State of the Union address are the clearest signal yet that there is a growing bipartisan desire to reduce health care costs and improve transparency for our patients. Physicians for Fair Coverage joins Senators Alexander, Cassidy, and Hassan in recognizing that one important way to achieve this is to close the insurance gap and eliminate unanticipated, out of network medical bills. We commend their efforts to bring attention to this important issue.”

“Over the past several years, health insurers have increasingly shifted costs by charging patients more through higher premiums and deductibles, while narrowing and restricting their coverage networks. Physicians for Fair Coverage is fighting back against this trend by working to protect patients from inadequate health insurance plans that leave them exposed when they are most vulnerable. We will continue to work with members of Congress and our coalition partners to advance comprehensive legislation that improves protections for patients, ensures fair and reasonable reimbursement for physician services, creates greater transparency and ultimately preserves access to care.”
