(Austin, TX) – Today, Physicians for Fair Coverage (PFC), a non-profit, non-partisan multi-specialty alliance of physicians partnered with state and national consumer organizations dedicated to improving patient protections and ending the surprise insurance gap, commended Texas Governor Greg Abbott for signing Senate Bill 1264. The new law will protect patients in Texas from surprise out-of-network medical bills by establishing a state-wide arbitration process that will resolve billing disputes between insurance companies and medical providers.
"Today, we are very pleased to add Texas to the growing list of states that have passed laws to protect patients from receiving surprise medical bills in their mailbox," said PFC's Chair, Dr. Sherif Zaafran, MD. "This is a win for patients and families across the state, and it would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our champions in the state legislature, Senators Hancock and Whitmire, and Representatives Oliverson and Martinez-Fisher. We hope the federal government will follow the example Texas has set by removing the threat of surprise medical bills for all Americans while protecting  access to quality medical care."

The bill signed into law bans the practice of balance-billing patients when they unknowingly or unintentionally receive out-of-network care and implements an arbitration process that removes patients from the negotiation process between insurers and providers in the event of a billing dispute.
